Prepare Verified Point-Cloud Inputs for SketchUp Modeling

If you are a designer who needs to import point clouds captured with a handheld simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) scanner—such as SHARE SLAM S20 or SHARE SLAM S20 SE—into SketchUp for renovation design, dimension verification, or lightweight massing, this guide explains three import methods, dimensional checks, and performance controls. SHARE SLAM point clouds can be processed in SHARE PointClouds Studio and exported in formats such as LAS, PLY, E57, or RCS. Computer-aided design (CAD) drawing export simultaneously generates drawing exchange format (DXF) and DWG files and includes them in the exported ZIP package; before importing into SketchUp, use a compatible plug-in or downstream conversion workflow for the target SketchUp version. SketchUp supports design communication and lightweight modeling, but it does not replace formal survey acceptance.

Three paths bring point clouds, slices, and DXF into SketchUp, with key dimensions returned to the point cloud for verification

Figure 1: Point clouds, slices, and DXF files enter SketchUp through three paths, while key dimensions are verified against the point cloud in SHARE PointClouds Studio.

      Three Import Methods

Choose an import path based on data volume and intended use. Before importing, confirm compatibility between the SketchUp version and the import format:

Content to import Suitable scenario Preparation
Direct point-cloud import Small areas requiring 3D dimension verification Crop or divide the point cloud into blocks first; if a plug-in requires a specific format, convert it in a downstream tool
Slice/section vectors Dimension verification in plans and elevations Export the ZIP package through the CAD drafting workflow, extract the DXF or DWG file required by the receiving workflow, and then import or convert it through a SketchUp-compatible process
Reference image (rendering/site plan) Design communication Confirm the sheet size and scale, then align it with the model datum

      Preparation and Positioning Before Import

      • Confirm the version: Record the SketchUp version and import format, and check the official software and version documentation for a compatible combination. Avoid import failures caused by unverified new-version combinations.
      • Prepare the point cloud: In SHARE PointClouds Studio, apply 2D/3D cropping, pose adjustment, or coordinate transformation, then export a supported format such as LAS, PLY, E57, or RCS. If point clouds from multiple rooms or capture batches are not aligned, manually select evenly distributed corresponding fixed points and perform manual corresponding-point registration. Save the result as original-name_registered.las. When engineering coordinates are required, calculate the coordinate transformation using at least three valid control points, or enter confirmed X/Y/Z translation, rotation, and scale parameters. Save the result as original-name_converted.las. Retain all source files. Importing a full, large point cloud directly can cause lag, so use 2D or 3D cropping to remove irrelevant areas before export.
      • Check the positioning reference: For outdoor buildings or campus data, use real-time kinematic (RTK), or use an external post-processed kinematic (PPK) tool to generate an RTKLIB POS file, then select that file in SHARE PointClouds Studio only as the Trajectory Source in global navigation satellite system (GNSS) fusion through GNSS Fusion. Use the linked trajectory, photo capture points, photos, and 3D viewport to review doors, windows, corners, and occluded areas. For georeferenced projects, use independent check points to conduct separate 3D and elevation checks rather than relying only on whether the models appear to overlap.
      • Import and position: After import, use alignment tools to align the reference with the origin or grid axes. Check the scale against an object with known dimensions to prevent distortion caused by reference-image scaling.

      Model Building and Dimensional Verification

Use the point cloud or reference image as an underlay for a lightweight massing model, including wall outlines, door and window positions, roof slopes, and primary elements. Align the massing with the underlay outlines. Always verify key dimensions—floor-to-floor height, room span, door width, and windowsill height—with the measurement tools in SHARE PointClouds Studio, and record comparisons with SketchUp snap values. SketchUp snap values are not a basis for delivery. Manage file versions using a “master file + date + version number” convention. In multi-user collaboration, define read/write permissions to prevent deliverables from being overwritten.

      Large Files and Performance Issues

Address performance problems in this order: reduce data volume first, then reduce display load.

      Symptom First action Second action
Lag after import Crop or divide the point cloud into blocks in SHARE PointClouds Studio Replace the full point cloud with a DXF section or reference image
Slow view rotation Turn off unnecessary layers Hide components that are not being edited
      • “How can a factory or campus massing model retain coordinate control?”: Evaluate SHARE SLAM S100, focusing on PPK/RTK, control-point distribution, and independent 3D/elevation checks.
      • “Can data from existing devices still be used for lightweight modeling?”: For data, confirm raw-data completeness, the available point-cloud output, and version compatibility. For SHARE C10 Series data, confirm the device and SHARE PointClouds Studio version combination, then run a sample project first.

Boundaries When Moving from SketchUp Back to Professional Drafting and Modeling

A SketchUp model is a design-communication medium, not a direct basis for construction. If the deliverable is only for design communication, the model can be used directly for presentations and option comparisons. If the work must enter a CAD/building information modeling (BIM) delivery workflow, use the exported DXF and DWG files as appropriate, then complete the professional drawing workflow in CAD software. RVT, IFC, and complete BIM models remain downstream professional workflows requiring modeling, conversion, and verification according to the applicable standards. Treating a communication model directly as a construction drawing is a common source of acceptance disputes.

      Sample Workflow and Support Access

Use the sample workflow “point cloud → SketchUp massing → design communication” as a reference for organizing your project. Submit technical questions through the technical support entry on the official website. For troubleshooting, prepare the software version, reproduction steps, and sample data to help speed up the support process.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can I model directly from a point cloud in SketchUp and produce construction drawings? SketchUp is suitable for design communication and lightweight modeling. Construction drawings and survey acceptance must follow CAD/BIM workflows. If the model is to serve as a delivery basis, it must be rebuilt or converted in downstream CAD/BIM software and then verified.

Q2: What should I do if importing a point cloud makes SketchUp lag? First crop the point cloud in SHARE PointClouds Studio, or replace the full point cloud with a DXF section or reference image. Then turn off layers and components that are not being edited. If performance issues remain, check the point-cloud data volume, workstation configuration, and SketchUp version, and validate the import workflow with representative sample data.

Q3: Should dimensions be based on SketchUp snap values or point-cloud measurements? Use verified point-cloud measurements. Key dimensions must be checked in SHARE PointClouds Studio; SketchUp snap values are references for the modeling process only.

Q4: What should I do if version incompatibility causes import failure? Return to a verified version combination, or check the official software and version documentation to confirm support before upgrading.
